THE MACEDONIAN MINORITY IN ALBANIA - MHRMC REPORT TO THE OSCE 2003 HUMAN DIMENSION IMPLEMENTATION MEETING
 

The four Macedonian organizations in Albania, Mir (Peace), Bratstvo (Brotherhood), MED (Macedonian Aegean Society) and Prespa, boycotted the 2001 census in Albania because there was no option for “Macedonian” in the census list. The Albanian government continues to minimize the actual number of Macedonians, and other minorities, in the country and in 2003, the Association of Macedonians in Albania (consisting of the four organizations) will conduct their own census of the number of Macedonians in Albania. It is estimated that this number is between 120,000 and 350,000 while the Albanian state only officially recognizes 5,000. [more]


MACEDONIANS WIN THREE COUNCILLOR'S POSITIONS IN ALBANIAN LOCAL ELECTIONS
 

At last Sunday’s local elections in Albania, the Macedonians from Mala Prespa won three from a total of thirteen councillor’s positions, while the mayor’s position was "lost" by 103 votes. The Organization for the Defense of the Rights of Macedonians in Albania, “Association Prespa”, whose registration into a political party is in progress, took part in the elections in a coalition with the Party for Human Rights and placed second with 716 votes won, right behind the ruling Socialists who won 819 votes. With this, the authentic Macedonian movement in Albania automatically received the right for one “parliamentary” position in the Regional council stationed in the city of Korcha, which is seen as a great accomplishment for the Macedonian movement in Albania. INVITATION FOR THE THIRD MACEDONIAN WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE

 

The Third Macedonian World Human Rights Conference will take place on September 20-21, 2003 in Prilep, Republic of Macedonia. Among the conference goals are: Presentation of the current level of respect for Macedonian human and national rights in Macedonia, the wider Balkan Peninsula where ethnic Macedonians live, as well as the Macedonian Diaspora; Development of greater acquaintance with the international human rights agreements (dealing with ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and other rights) and the mechanisms that ensure their implementation.... THE MACEDONIAN MINORITY IN ALBANIA

 

The part of Macedonia known as Mala Prespa was given to Albania by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. This treaty finalized the partition of Macedonia between Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria and Albania and began the era of denationalization and forced assimilation of the Macedonian people. Today, the Macedonians in Albania have some limited freedom and human rights, especially in comparison to the Macedonians in Greece and Bulgaria, who are severely discriminated against. COUNCIL OF EUROPE: ALBANIA IS A MULTIETHNIC STATE

The official report on minorities by the Albanian Government says that only 2% of the population in Albania are not [ethnic] Albanians. This information has been presented to the public since the time of the ultra-communist ruler Enver Hoxha.  Council of Europe's mission visited Albania and formed a Center for Ethnic Research in Tirana. "The results of this research show that about one million or 35% of the total population in the country are members of minorities. This makes Albania a multiethnic state," said the Director of the Center for Ethnic Research in Tirana, Kimet Fetahu.  According the initial research results, seven minority ethnic groups live in Albania: Macedonians, Greeks, Vlachs, Egyptians, Roma, Serbs and Montenegrins... MACEDONIAN AND GREEK MINORITIES IN ALBANIA BOYCOTT THE 2001 CENSUS
 

Macedonian and Greek minority in Albania decided to boycott the population census that started on April 1 this year, reports Radio Deutsche Welle. According to the President of the Association of Macedonians in Albania - Edmond Temelkov, reason for this decision is the absence of the option "Macedonian" in the census lists. If this omission is not corrected, Macedonians in Albania will boycott next parliamentary elections as well, stated Temelkov. As he said, there are four Macedonian organizations in Albania: Mir (Peace), Bratstvo (Brotherhood), MED (Macedonian Aegean Society) and Prespa and they all agree to boycott the census. It has to be pointed out, that the Albanian society is characterised by a multiethnic, multireligious and problematic structure in intercommunitary communication.
