HUMANITARIAN DISASTER OF REFUGEES FROM MALA PRESPA
Around 160 Macedonian refugees from Mala Prespa, Albania, which are in
shelter Carina near to Resen for ten days are starving, since Government
on February 3 delivered decision to annul the free food. As "Dnevnik"
writes, there is difficult atmosphere in the camp and adults do not eat at
all in order to leave food for around 80 children in the camp. Spase
Cvetkovski, representative of refugees for "Dnevnik" stated that last
reserves of food are almost wasted and if somebody from Government or from
humanitarian organizations does not come to help, disaster could happen.
Cvetanovski stated that although refugees announced protest in front of
the Government they can not realize it because they do not have money for
transportation and they are to exhausted for travelling to Skopje.
Cvetanovski stated that according to decision of Government, refugees on
March 31 should leave premises in camp Carina and they will be left
without roof over their heads. As MTV reports, this decision of the
Government is in context of carrying out of intention for closing the camp
and for providing fertile land which would be given to refugees to work on
and provide existence from. Refugees do not know when it would be carried
out and where they will live in the future, because Government did not
promise providing of new premises. They point that Government previously
stopped paying money recompense and that they live in miserable conditions
without water and electricity.
LOCAL POPULATION DOES NOT ALLOW BUILDING OF SHELTER FOR REFUGEES IN
DRACEVO
Government has intention to build shelter in settlement Dracevo in Skopje
in which around 200 refugees would be sheltered. Local population opposes
to this and threatens to prevent building of the
camp with living wall. They say that Dracevo is peaceful settlement, and
if this camp is built it will be flooded with criminals. As "Dnevnik"
writes, in Ministry of labor and social policy say that building of this
camp is requested by European Agency for Reconstruction and that it will
be built according to European standards. In ministry is said that the
camp will be built phase by phase and refugees will stay in it until
procedure for their documents is over. For that period these persons will
be under police security and with presence of social workers. In Ministry
was stated that with this camp settlement Dracevo would be urbanized and
persons which will stay in the center can not be treated as criminals.
